After the train journey to Oatley and morning tea in the park, eleven walkers set off from Oatley Station for the 1.2km suburban walk to the Oatley Park track head in Waterfall Road.
Oatley Park is a unique remnant of bushland in the Hurstville area, preserved for public recreation in 1887 through the lobbying of a local cattle farmer and other community minded people.
Their efforts were thoroughly appreciated as we walked the 5 kilometre track, enjoying the woodlands, flowering plants, wetland birds, views of Lime Kiln Bay, Jew Fish Bay (with its huge netted swimming pool) and the Georges River.
Just as we finished lunch at Jew Fish Bay, the Plus walkers caught up with us and a good time was had by all.
A deviation up the hill brought us to the historic picnic area, and its "castle", a picnic shelter and lookout constructed by unemployed people during the Depression.
After skirting Jew Fish Bay and heading north to the park entrance, we made our way back through suburbia to a classy coffee stop - private restaurant room, chandelier & all.
