On a perfect Sydney spring day, eight people assembled at the end of Day Road Cheltenham, track-head. We walked NW, up a beautifully maintained bush track to the top of the ridge and Pennant Hills Oval for morning tea. From there our way was on fire trails. Firstly SE down to Delvin’s Creek, then W past Whale Rock and Ducky’s’ Waterholes (alas no longer fit for swimming) and finally back to track-head. We took a second bush track from Day Road up to the end of Corban Road and the National Trust Properties Ahimsa, built by Marie Byles, and the Buddhist meditation sanctuary ‘Hut of Happy Omens’. On the latter’s verandah we ate lunch, looking past a persistent rooster to the bush. No coffee – the Cheltenham Recreation Club’s café was not open, so we said our farewells at Cheltenham station.
In summary this is a very pleasant local walk, with a variety of tracks, flowers and rocks. It is a good walk on our program.
Many thanks to our second time visitor who kindly sent photos; with pleasure published!
Some small flowers and some abundant : Native Iris Patersonia glabrata and Fine-leaf Bush Pea Pultenaea stipularis
And rocks: serrated and supported. (No, we don't know how those yellow wedges were inserted, either.)
The shoot-out: 'Good day at Whale Rock'
Lawrie gave us the Aborginal name for the water dragon: 'Lunch' ... and the rooster didn't believe our threats to make chicken sandwiches.
For the record: Leaders Helen A and Chris B were followed by Lawrie, Lea, Peter, Cherry, Rosemary W and one visitor.
