29 September - Regular Walk: Ku-Ring-Gai Chase NP - Challenger/Bairne/Soldiers Point Tracks

On a beautiful spring day, 12 walkers set out from West Head Road on the first of two trails to be covered. The Challenger Track is an easy one hour return passing through a shady eucalypt forest where the reward at morning tea was a stunning view of the Hawkesbury River, Broken Bay, Brooklyn & up to Patonga. On returning to the cars we drove approximately 2kms to the start of the Bairne Trail. This is an easy undulating 2 hour return and we were delighted to find a lovely cluster of Waratahs en route. An early lunch was enjoyed at a rock platform, with glimpses of the Basin and Coasters Retreat through the trees, with Soldiers Point to the right. On heading back Bert convinced us that it was well worth a look at the Towlers Lookout (which turned out to be correct) so Claude led part of the group there while Margaret returned to the cars with the rest. Coffee was enjoyed at Bar P’neenies Terrey Hills where we all wished Bert well for his departure to Japan & Hokkaido Island on Monday. He assured us he will take some good shots of any “rocket sightings” from the north!!
