After scrambling to find long dis-used wet weather gear, a small group set out from Mt Kuring-gai Station. To avoid the Oxfam run, the route was altered to a descent via the Mt Kuring-gai walking track, north along the banks of Cowan Creek and ascent via Waratah Gully to Berowra where a relaxed coffee was enjoyed. An earlier shower of rain had left the persoonias glistening like Christmas trees, and as the sun came out, our wet weather jackets were shed.
The waters of Cowan Creek were as still as a millpond and beautifully green. We were led for a distance by a lyre bird, always just out of reach, and we wondered if the white faced heron we saw in each inlet was the same one or if each has their own fishing grounds. The ominous sky in the morning gave way to a beautiful day for walking, with some early flowers enjoyed by all.
