THE GAP
With a coastline walk on the program, members might have expected the weather to be ‘wild and wooly’. However, for this last walk of the year, the weather gods gave us ‘mild and Woolley’ instead. Mercilessly exploiting the ‘last walk of the year’ theme, the leaders celebrated their imminent release from walk-leading duties by starting with coffee before the walk at the Grumpy Baker in Dover Heights – and quite a few walkers joined in! Don was then able to reprise his EZY Walk from two weeks previous and give everyone the historical run-down of Macquarie Lighthouse, the Signal Station, the wreck of the Dunbar and the Gap. Did I mention how beautiful the weather was for such a coastline walk? It was perfect! After pausing at the Gap (no-one jumped!) we headed northwards to Camp Cove beach, passed HMAS Watson, were collectively disappointed by the lack of talent at Lady Bay nudist beach, and rounded South Head to lunch beside the Hornby Light with spectacular views across the entrance to Sydney Harbour to North Head. Turning south after lunch we returned to Camp Cove and crossed the beach to Green Point, taking in the historical remains of the WW2 Anti-submarine net which crossed Sydney Harbour from Green Point. After that it was, figuratively, downhill all the way to Watsons Bay wharf and a ferry back to Circular Quay and coffee (for a select few).
