a
Covid19-style AGM at Bobbin Head
The dreaded virus has continued to impact on HVB activities, like so many other aspects of our community. In particular, its latest blow was to the HVB Annual General Meeting, held at Bobbin Head before the programmed walks on 28 August. Formal attendance at the meeting was limited to 20. The first 20 arrivals arranged themselves around the location at the regulation social distance, more or less within hearing range, while the later comers watched (or ignored) proceedings from afar. These arrangements did not prolong the event, which was concluded quickly and efficiently by the executive team.
Outgoing A/President Steve opened the meeting and quickly dealt with the Minutes of last year’s AGM, his Annual Report and the Treasurer’s report. All had been circulated to members and were accepted without dissent or query. Steve then handed the meeting over to Bert, for the election of Officers and Committee Members.
Bert was pleased to announce that the number of nominations exactly matched the number of positions to be filled. There was therefore no need to hold an election and he advised that the new Committee would be as follows:
President Barbara R Vice President Steve P Secretary John G Treasurer Don B Ordinary members Michael F, Mary G, Lyndy L, Peter R, Anne R, and Anne G.
These members were welcomed by general acclamation, and Bert noted in particular that Barbara is the first woman to be elected as President since the Club was incorporated. Barbara pointed out that this was not really a precedent because the Club had been run entirely by women (Barbara Hamilton and then Jean Allen and Anne Eggins) for its entire lifespan before incorporation. Bert also welcomed Michael F who joins the Committee for the first time.
It is also fitting to acknowledge Steve’s contribution to the Club since being unexpectedly thrust into the A/President role – only to be then at the helm when the equally unexpected Covid19 pandemic arrived and regulations governing the club’s ability to organise walks were changing on an almost daily basis. Following the closure of the meeting, a large throng of walkers (just under 60!) sorted themselves into three groups and proceeded to enjoy the warm sunny weather and “To promote health and pleasure through walking as a group”.
