We had 15 walkers meeting at Central Station near the clock in the main concourse. All of us jumped on board the light rail at 9.10 am to Leichhardt North Station where we got off and started our walk. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day to do this walk around the water (chilly at first but in the sun it turned out to be quite warm).

Hawthorn Canal Coffee distraction
We walked along the Iron Cove Creek to get to the bay. First stop Haberfield Rowing Club, some walkers bought coffee and others used the facilities. Continuing our walk to Rodd Point where we had morning tea and looked at the original burial ground for the Rodd forefather and his wife with a cross marking the spot.

Rodds Point beyond the mangroves Morning tea
Continuing our walk past the mangroves with Lyndy explaining their value to the environment. They serve as critical habitats for marine life, acting as nurseries for juvenile fish and providing protection against coastal erosion and natural disasters by buffering winds and waves. Additionally, mangroves improve water quality by trapping sediments and play a significant role in carbon sequestration, helping to mitigate climate change. Overall, mangrove ecosystems are vital for biodiversity, coastal protection, and environmental health.

Drinks break Callan park waterfront
We could see the Sydney Skyline most of the way. Climbing the walkway onto Iron Cove Bridge we crossed to the Callan Park side. We walked another kilometre or two until we reached our lunch spot, where we occupied 3 tables spreading ourselves out and enjoying lunch and the sunshine. The parkland on this side of the bridge used to belong to the Callan Park Mental Asylum which was the first mental asylum in Sydney. It has now been turned into playing fields, picnic areas, bicycle trails and walking tracks.
Lunch Fishtrap sculpture
No wind today, not like the day Lyndy and I did the recce. After lunch it was a short walk to La Montage coffee shop. We sat outside and had coffee, iced chocolate, iced coffee etc.
Sue and Michael suggested a short way back to the Leichhardt North Station where we boarded the light rail back to Central Staton and went our separate ways.
Everyone enjoyed the walk, company and the sunshine so a good day overall
