Around the Bay
On arrival at Como station the forecast showers descended earlier than anticipated. Variously protected by rain jackets and umbrellas we walked a short distance, reaching the attractive Como Pleasure Grounds for an early morning tea or coffee.
The next highlight of our walk was the historic Como railway bridge. Designed by John Whitton, this bridge originally opened in December 1885 as single-track. The line was later duplicated then replaced to meet the needs of the day. Further along the footpath we were joined by a latecomer, increasing our number to ten.

Soon after crossing the Como bridge, we turned on Mimosa Street to locate an entry point to Myles Dunphy Bushland Reserve – a pleasant green patch, though somewhat weedy. This is one of three smaller green spaces that we linked together as we turned left and right through the streets of Oatley – the others being at Myrtle Street and Macken Crescent.
At the end of Douglas Haig Street, we arrived at Oatley Park and turned left onto the first track where we enjoyed the well-kept bushland with scenic views of Jew Fish Bay to our left. We paused briefly at Oatley Baths to observe the lone swimmer (not one of our walkers).

Keeping the bay to our left we soon joined The Headland Track, which lead us around the peninsular until the adjacent waterway changed name from Jew Fish to Lime Kiln Bay. A flight of stone and wooden steps took us uphill to locate Oatley Park Castle, which is a castellated tower built in 1937. We next took a short walk along the Ridge Track to arrive at Steam Roller Park for our lunch break.

Feeling refreshed we then turned onto Frogs Hollow Track, trending downhill until we spotted the mangroves of Lime Kiln Bay where we joined the Lime Kiln Bay Circuit Walk. The wetlands here provided a very different ecosystem to observe and enjoy.

After leaving the wetlands we were back to street walking, tramping uphill until we reached Mulga Road. We ended the day with a well-earned coffee (with complimentary chocolate) or ice-cream at Adora. A final dash through the rain took us to Oatley station for our journey home.
Despite intermittent showers and high humidity, our group agreed that the route that we walked is very attractive and worth the journey to get here.
