Hawkesbury River from Kangaroo Point
After a week of showery Sydney weather, it was no surprise that our Friday walking day had the same forecast – and so it started much as expected with the same grey overcast skies, fog, and the hint of a shower. That didn’t stop an eventual 17 walkers heading off from Hawkesbury River station at Brooklyn with a slight change of leaders – Leader Ros was taking it easy with an injury, and so it was Mary and JohnG leading the way (although Ros made it as far as our morning tea stop before returning to Brooklyn).

The walk has a fair proportion of street walking, which is not ideal, but the first section has a short section of boardwalk through the mangroves bordering the Hawkesbury River to add some interest.

Morning tea was had at the Saltpan Creek reserve which now boasts ‘The Amphitheatre’ – a rather nicely landscaped set of recycled stone steps – just perfect as seating for our morning tea and topped off by a short recital by Robyn Mi (probably the acoustics could be improved before they can call it a real amphitheatre!).

Then, alas, a longer stretch of street walking before we reached Tom Richmond Oval and the start of the grand new 1 km boardwalk to Kangaroo Point.

There we stopped for lunch enjoying a fine view of the Hawkesbury River between Peats Ferry Bridge (the original Pacific Highway bridge opened in 1945) and the current railway bridge in the distance. We were both surprised and pleased to encounter Tim on the boardwalk and he joined us for lunch. Although not able to walk much at present, Tim thought he’d like to come and say hello!

And then, as the sun peaked through the increasingly blue sky and the day warmed, we retraced our steps to Brooklyn and our coffee reward at the very busy Hawkesbury River Marina Cafe
