Seven walkers arrived to enjoy today’s Regular Walk, and for most the walk was completely new. After a week of “on and off” rain, the day was surprisingly, mostly sunny, and the walking conditions perfect. Our walk started at the track head of the Slippery Dip Fire Trail and slowly made its way down hill to the aboriginal site of Moon Rock, where many rock engravings are still visible.

From here we made our way along a narrow bush track, before finally emerging from the scrub onto an adjacent fire trail, which led back to the badly eroded Slippery Dip Fire Trail. A little further on, we turned onto the Deep Creek Valley Trail with its many wild flowers, and headed to the valley waterfall, and a beautiful spot for morning tea.

This valley track follows a creek tributary of Deep Creek, and due to recent rains presented a number of wet slippery challenges. Once onto the Deep Creek flood plain, the track was easy and meandered through a forest of ferns and tall eucalypts until we reached our destination at Deep Creek Reserve, for lunch and another waterfall. Dogs and kookaburras made lunch interesting.

After lunch, we retraced our steps back the same way, to our cars at Morgan Road. Unfortunately, we were not able to do the loop walk as described on the Program, as the old Slippery Dip track up the mountain to Narrabeen Trig, no longer exists. This area of the mountain has been devoted to a spaghetti of mountain bike trails by National Parks, and is now unsafe for hikers.
It was a great day’s walk, and everyone was thankful they safely negotiated all the tricky spots.
