Eighteen walkers met at the Glenbrook National Parl gate for the Camp Fire Creek Circuit walk in ideal conditions – cool temperature, dry tracks & pleasant company.
The initial (& final 500 metres) were tiresome with many steep steps down to the creek from the car park and rough walking from there for a while.
However the track soon became more friendly and we were able to appreciate the peace of the bush, broken occasionally by helicopters flying overhead to the National Parks heli-base, high above the eastern bank of the creek.
Morning tea was taken on a large rock outcrop about 1.5km into the walk, providing fuel for the long, steady climb up to the cave and on to the lunch stop at the Cave car park.
The return part of the loop consisted of a lovely stroll through the bush along a ridge before descending steadily to the creek and then passing Aboriginal rubbing grooves and a massive rock overhang and so back to the trail divide.
The remainder of the walk consisted of retracing the first 1.5kms to the start of the walk, at which point the intrepid step-climbers ascended the steep steps back to the car park, while others opted to wait at Glenbrook Causeway for the cars to come down from the car park and pick them up.
Highlights of the walk, but unfortunately only seen by a very few walkers each time, were a beautiful fantail and a lyrebird.
A well-deserved refreshment break was enjoyed in Glenbrook before the drive home.
Special thanks to the drivers and to Don B for his ever-willing Tail-end Charlie work. Special mention too to John M for walking to the National Park gate from Glenbrook station at an impressive clip, while refusing offers of lifts as we drove by.
