Twelve walkers gathered at the Wyatt Coffee Shop to walk around historic Gordon.
Lyndy and Elizabeth led the walkers through the Gordon Recreation Ground to Eryldene historic house and garden. Robyn spoke about Prof. E G Waterhouse who owned the house and the architect William Hardy Wilson. The house was built in 1913 in the colonial revival style.
We then walked down McIntosh Street and Arthur Street to the Terrum-Bine Reserve, where we had morning tea. Robyn spoke about the history of Gordon and how the suburb took its name from “Gordondale”, the property of Robert McIntosh.
The walkers then made their way around the Harry Seidler Reserve. We stopped to look at the home of Harry Seidler. Next we looked at the Quarry Masons Reserve where the hardened sandstone was mined to build roads and buildings in Ku-Ring-Gai.
We walked through Kalang Reserve to Illeroy Street where the 400 year old blackbutt tree “Terrum-Bine” grows. Here Robyn spoke about Annie Wyatt, who was responsible for establishing the Ku-Ring-Gai Tree Lovers League and the National Trust.
Thank you to Rosie for offering her back verandah for our lunch spot. We enjoyed eating our lunch there while the rain came down. After lunch we made our way back via Nelson Street, where we saw a set of magnificent gates from the Botanic Gardens.
Eight of us enjoyed coffee afterwards at the Wyatt Coffee Shop.
Outside 'Eryldene', the first historic house. Robyn gives a talk and Trevor takes notes.
