Under a lovely blue sky, twelve walkers set off from Lidcombe Station.

We entered the cemetery at the East Street gates.  At the centre of the gates is a sculpture designed by Hossain Valamanesh and erected in 1992.  It is entitled “Journey” and depicts the transition from one life to the next.

Next we saw the John Frazer Mausoleum:  This is the largest monument in the cemetery.  It uses Pyrmont sandstone and  was completed in 1894.

We had morning tea at the John Dunmore Lang 1799-1878 and John Hunter Ballie 1818-1854  family plot.

Then we saw the grave of James Barnet (1827-1904) who was Colonial Architect.  He designed many notable Sydney buildings including the GPO.

We looked at the Quong Sin Tong shrine erected in 1877 to commemorate the Chinese community buried in Rookwood.  We also saw the Goldfields miners memorial erected in 2015 remembering the Chinese miners killed in the Lambing Flat riots (in the Young area).

At Necropolis circuit we looked at the remains of the Number One Mortuary Station.

In 1861 the Government purchased 688 Ha at Liberty Plains for a new cemetery to replace the Devonshire St. cemetery where Central Station now stands.  By 1866 land had been cleared and construction of the cemetery began.  Trains bought the coffins and the mourners to the cemetery.

This station was demolished in 1956 and removed stone by stone to Ainslie in Canberra where it is now All Saints Anglican Church.

Next we saw the Anthony Horden Monument, where Anthony Horden 2nd and his son Samuel are buried.  The store began in 1823 and became the largest retail store in Sydney.

We walked along the Serpentine Canal and Ponds.  It is an open brick-lined drain with a series of ponds.  Part was built in 1874.  Then we had lunch in the gazebo near the Anthony Horden Monument.

After lunch we saw the James Watson vault .  This gothic vault was designed by Wardell and Vernon who designed many Sydney buildings.

Then we viewed the Jewish Martyrs Memorial designed by Harry Seidler.  This is a tribute to the Jews killed by the Nazis in the Second World War.

We walked to the Greek Orthodox Chapel.  After viewing the chapel we caught the bus to Strathfield where we had coffee.
