Seven walkers started our walk at Picnic Point Reserve in Springwood by taking an easy stroll via local streets to the start of Sassafras Gully. It’s best to do this street section at the start so we finish at our cars when exiting the bush in the afternoon.

The track meandered down besides the creek as it descended through damp gullies that offered plenty of photo opportunities of ferns, cliffs, fungi, flowers and gums in the dappled morning light. There were conversations about navigating by the moss on trees not being so obvious here, to questioning David and my firm statements that we had no leeches on the recce (more on this later) etc.

Along the track.....

We soon reached our morning tea spot at the junction with Glenbrook Creek. Some opted to cross the very slippery crossing of Glenbrook Creek for morning tea in the sun, on the (almost) dry rocks. This site offered great views of the creek whilst the others stayed on the north side at the campsite, sitting on the log.

Re-joining the others on the north side of Glenbrook creek, the group followed this Creek downstream to eventually reach Perch Ponds offering another campsite.

Group photo taken, we then started our climb, following Magdala Creek, heading north towards Springwood. After 300m we reached Martins Falls for our lunch spot on slightly damp rocks that offered clear view of the falls. We were so lucky with the rainfall being low (a couple of short, light showers only) compared to earlier forecasts but this meant that the falls had only a small flow. This did not stop Peter clambering behind the falls for photos.

Despite earlier statements, leeches had been “a thing” on this walk. It was obviously due to the rain waking them up. All were checking on a regular basis and multiple bleeds were sighted at the end. Most of these cute leeches however were quite small – the poor undernourished things!

Following lunch, we continued past Magdala Falls lookout and eventually the turnoff to Lawsons lookout that we bypassed due to it being not worth the side-trip – visit by car if you like. There were about 10 crossings of this creek on our return to Springwood. Most walkers were ok negotiating these creek crossings, however some side tracks can be confusing, so care needs to be taken. There was however, one mishap heading up Magdala Creek, a sudden desire to have a splash in a puddle by, what seemed in slow motion, a controlled slide down a green rock, but this participant was fine and laughed it off.
