A forecast of glorious weather enticed 20 enthusiastic walkers to chilly Hornsby Railway Station for the trip to Wondabyne. Apart from avoiding censure in the Quiet Carriage on the train, and labouring up the 90m elevation at the beginning of the walk, our conversation for the rest of the walk hardly dropped below a dull roar.

The walk took us through a light scrub of early wild flowers, scattered small eucalypts and over rock platforms including a deeply tessellated pavement where we stopped for morning tea.

On the way we paused to enjoy views to Mooney Mooney, Broken Bay and Dangar Island. From there the track narrowed to single file and we scrambled down challenging rocks and navigated the sometimes steep, deeply eroded, track which unfortunately caused a nasty fall. Here we regrouped while our fellow walker was administered first aid and then resolutely walked on with us, past the waterhole, home to the swamp banksia with its 25cm leaves and on to Pindar Cave.

Minutes later we stopped briefly to admire the vast sandstone shelter, water falling over its lip after the recent rain. Although this walk is named “Wondabyne to Pindar Cave” we chose to take the short walk down to the cascades, at the top of the falls, for lunch. An energetic few climbed down to the base of the falls. Some were walking this track for the second or third time but hadn’t pushed on to the falls before today. I think it was generally agreed that this was the highlight of the day.

We made good time back to Wondabyne Station and it was decided that we could take the opportunity to debrief over the customary cup of coffee. This turned out to be at Ela Mesa, a pleasant Greek café in Woy Woy with water views. Sadly a couple short of the number that set out in the morning - your friends wish you a speedy recovery. Then it was back to the train and home.
