The walk from Fairmont Resort at Leura to Wentworth Falls and back to the Conservation Hut was thoroughly enjoyed even if it was rather challenging! A relaxed coffee at a Wentworth Falls café after the walk rejuvenated us, giving us the capacity to cope with the drive home!
After leaving a car, for the end of walk shuttle, at the Conservation Hut car park, we drove to the rather grand Fairmont Resort, established in the 1980s and catering to well heeled customers.
The Grand Cliff Top Track was followed from there to a junction with the Inspiration Point Track which took us south on a long descent to Moya Point. From here we enjoyed the first of the day’s numerous and excellent vistas of Kings Tableland, Mount Solitary & the Jamison Valley.
A short distance back up the track, we took a detour to Gladstone Lookout, our morning tea spot, with a similar outlook to Moya Point but also with good views of Leura, Sublime Point & Narrow Neck.
After climbing back to the Grand Cliff Top Track, we enjoyed an easy walk past the Leura Golf Course before a dramatic descent to the Valley of the Waters which was crossed on Lillians Bridge.
Of course a steep descent inevitably necessitates steep ascents which brought us to the Queen Victoria Lookout above Empress Falls and to the Overcliff Track. This track follows the escarpment perimeter with all its ups, downs and indentations to Breakfast Point Lookout and a stunning outlook for lunch.
Soon after the Den Fenella Creek was crossed in a moist gully, we joined the Undercliff Track which was true to its name with lengthy rock overhangs. From this track we enjoyed the first views of the Upper Wentworth Falls.
It was not much further to Fletchers Lookout, Jamison Creek and the picturesque Queen’s Cascades just above Wentworth Falls.
The Weeping Rock Circuit Track, beside Jamison Creek, was taken to the Wentworth Falls Track which we climbed to a building site at the Wentworth Falls Picnic Area. Undoubtedly an impressive revamping will be enjoyed there soon. After taking in another vista south from a lookout there, we climbed the Shortcut Track to the very recently reopened Conservation Hut.
In doing a 9.5 kilometre walk which involved a total ascent of 470 metres, we felt we had earned our Wentworth Falls refreshment. There was considerable gratitude that we hadn’t taken the longer route first planned with an extra 100 metre ascent!
